The Fishermen's bastion (Halászbástya) was built between 1899-1905 in the Neo-Romanesque style as designed by Frigyes Schulek. This section of the walls at the rear of the church used to be defended by the fishermen's guild in the Middle Ages, hence its name. Of course, the Fishermen's Bastion has no military role. It is a look-out terrace, which provides wonderful views of the Danube and the great buildings on the Pest side. Looking at it from the other side it is perhaps the brightest gem of the Castle Hill, and it also provides a magnificent stairway leading up to the Hill from the Víziváros (Water Town) district below.
