Castle Hill rises about 50-60 meters above the level of the Danube and is about one and a half km long. At its highest point it is 167 m above sea level. The essentially flat plateau is widest, almost half a kilometer, at the northern end. The hill is capped by a 10-12 m thick layer of limestone, including an extensive and partly natural system of caves. During the Middle Ages this was developed to form a continuous system of underground passages. |
Owing to its natural endowments and strategic position Castle Hill has been inhabited for a long time. The first royal fort here was built in the middle of the 13th century by king Béla IV, and since experience showed that the Mongols could not capture forts built on the top of hills, many people came to settle behind these protective walls. A good part of these new settlers were Germans. |
