Until the Turks came Castle Hill was the seat of Hungarian kings and the centre of public life. The medieval Royal Palace and most of the private houses of the Castle District were destroyed at the end of the 17th century just as the new Baroque palace and the adjoining private homes were destroyed again at the end of the Second World War. Their reconstruction, which incorporated surviving parts from various periods, is a real achievement of Hungarian historic monument protection. |
The stroll on Castle Hill should perhaps begin at “Szentháromság tér”, which is the central point of the Castle District from the geographic aspects just as well as from the scenic and cultural point of view. The square was named after the Column of the Holy Trinity at the centre, which was erected after an outbreak of the plague, between 1710 and 1713. |
